The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is the most complete and thriving art complex in Lisbon. It comprises a Museum displaying the private Gulbenkian art collection – an Armenian philanthropist – and the Modern Art Center, the CAMJAP, with a superb contemporary art collection that contains pieces of some the most interesting contemporary Portuguese artists.

Both the museums and permanent and temporary collections are a must see if one wants to understand the Portuguese art scene. The building’s architecture and the layout of the park is one the most attractive in architecture that can be found in the country. The large park its the perfect place to enjoy the last hours of sun protected from the noises of the city. You can sit in the grass, gaze at the lake side by side with dozens of sculptures and people reading, sleeping, talking or just relaxing. There’s also an amphitheater, cafe, bookstore, souvenir shop and a book fair in the large building complex.
