Museu do Chiado – National Art Stop

The National Museum of Contemporary Art has a vast and extremely interesting collection that displays works of the best in modern, surrealistic, romantic and realistic arts of Portuguese artists. Here you can see works of Almada Negreiros and Columbano including the very famous Grupo do Leão (referring to a restaurant downtown).

There are also beautiful pieces of contemporary art like the massive object by Rui Chafes on the stairs down to the cafeteria outside. The building itself is an old convent renovated 14 years ago by the renowned architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Museu do Chiado is a museum in the middle of the city, close to everything and very inviting to stroll in the several floors and vast galleries. The building itself is a true work of art and silent enough for me to call it contemplative and peaceful.

Tip: Entrance is free on Sunday mornings until 14:00.
