Pai Tirano – A cinematic retreat
Last updated: Sep 15th, 2009 | By: Rafael Vieira
Hidden in a small back street but close to the busiest parts of the Bica and Bairro Alto districts, the small bar of Pai Tirano is completely decorated in black and red and shows a beautiful permanent exhibition of posters and artifacts related with Portuguese cinema (Fado cinema and classical Portuguese cinematography). The name of the bar itself is a dedication to a film by António Lopes Ribeiro, one from the golden age of the Portuguese cinema.
Still called Animatógarfo for a famous restaurant that existed here and also quite often confused with Animatógrafo of 1907 on downtown Lisbon – the bar presents you with a fine collection of excellent toasts and garlic bread that feed your soul and spirit and prompt you to long hours of conversation deep buried in its comfortable sofas and chairs. The musical selection is always excellent, ranging from New Punk to Lounge and also the service is quite friendly. Refreshing spot with a wider schedule comparing to Bairro Alto offering.
Tip : try the Frangalho toast, that’s my personal favorite! Or the amazingly tasty garlic
bread!
